Oh, the things we do for fun

Snowbelt’s Figures and Steps:

We dance Fieldtown and Bampton, and some Border

  • Bs: back step
  • Ss: single step
  • Ds: double step
  • Ftj: Foot together jump (Fieldtown caper)
  • Hc: half caper
  • C: caper
  • Gy: galley
  • Sis: side step
  • Bbs: buggy bumpers
  • RTB's: right toe back capers

Fieldtown dances consist of:

Foot up: 1ds up, 1ds in place, 2 bs, ftj to turn or gy out, repeat in the opposite direction.

Half Gyp: 1ds passing right shoulders with partner, 1 ds in place, 2 bs, ftj, repeat passing left shoulders.

Back to Back, aka Cheeks: 1 ds passing right shoulders with partner, sisL, 2 bs, ftj, repeat in the opposite direction. Cheeks implies that you are crossing behind your partner closer than you would normally cross (with little to no clearance as opposed to a foot or more).

Rounds: 1ds clockwise around circle, 1 ds into the center. 2 bs out of center, ftj to turn over left shoulder (the hard way). 1 ds counter clockwise around circle, 1 ds into center, 2 bs out of center, ftj in place.

Bampton dances consist of:

Foot up: 1 ss up, 1 ss in place, 2 bs, hc to turn out. Repeat in opposite direction.

Half Gyp: 1ss passing right shoulders with partner, 1ss in place, 2 bs, hc, repeat passing left shoulders.

Whole Gyp: 2 ss revolving clockwise around partner to opposite place, 2 bs back home, hc, repeat in opposite direction.

Rounds: 2 ss around circle clockwise, 2 bs still in circle, hc to turn over left shoulder (the hard way). Repeat in opposite direction, ending in place.

Snowbelt Bampton variation for 3:

Set consists of 1 and 2 facing the musician and 3 dropped behind to form a triangle with the flat side to the musician.

Half Gyp: 2 and 3 turn to face 1 on the diagonal, 1 ss to pass each other (1 and 2 by the R, 1 and 3 by the L), 1 ss in place, 2 bs and hc in original place. Repeat with 1 and 3 facing 2 on the other diagonal.

Whole Gyp of DOOM!: all face into the center. 1 ss into the center, 1 ss twirling around the middle whirling hankies over heads to end (having inverted the triangle) opposite original place. 2 bs to new place, hc. Repeat, ending up back where you started.
