Snowbelt Morris is a mixed gender morris team based in the greater Rochester area. For over twenty years we’ve been bringing merriment to community venues such as farmers markets, festivals, town squares, nursing homes, wineries, and pubs.
Morris dancing is seasonal tradition from the rural Cotswold and coal-mining Welsh border regions of England. With bells on our legs and colorful ribbons on our arms, we wave handkerchiefs and clash sticks to joyfully celebrate the seasons and banish the dark of winter. It is fun to watch, and even more fun to do!
Some of our dances are traditional, some just look traditional, and some are more tradition-inspired. Since morris dancing is a living tradition, some dances have been written by our team and those of our friends.
We always welcome new dancers and musicians to our practices on Wednesday evenings. All you need to be a dancer is the will, relatively functional limbs, and a good sense of rhythm. All you need to be a musician is a portable instrument and enough skill with it to learn a basic folk tune.
Snowbelt Morris began in 2003, when several former morris dancers joined together to welcome in the spring. Our name refers to the beautiful, always predictable weather in our part of the country.
